Concealed Carry License FAQ

A concealed carry class will teach you the law of self defense.

Why do I need a CCL?

Do you know the laws that pertain to the use of force and use of deadly force? When do you have the right to protect yourself or a loved one? Where can you carry a gun? If I have to travel to a another State am I allowed to carry a gun there? We answer these and many other questions during the training course.

This is an 8 hour structured course that covers the legal aspects of carrying a firearm including the laws of Kansas covering the use of force in defense of yourself, another person or your property. We explain the civil and criminal aspects of the law and the consequences that you could be subject to should you have to use your firearm to protect yourself, someone else or your property. We will break down some real world incidents and show how the law applies to those incidents.

Another benefit of the CCL is when buying a firearm from a licensed dealer you are not required to submit to a background check at the time of the purchase. As long as your license stays current you can sign for your gun and walk out with your purchase right then. All CCL holders are screened at the time of application for issues which would prevent you from purchasing a firearm. This is also beneficial when purchasing a firearm from an individual as it shows the seller that you are no criminal.

I see a lot of instructors. who should I choose?

The State of Kansas has determined that an instructor may be someone who has attended as little as 16 hours of a NRA Class.

I have spent 35+ years in Law Enforcement and a great part of that as an instructor. I have many hours of adult learning workshops and training seminars. I served for many years as a Field Training Officer teaching new officers the skills they need to survive.

For 35+ years my only job has revolved around the use of force. Not only in learning, but teaching and the practical application of it. Ask your potential  instructor if they have ever been involved in a use of force incident. I have numerous cases where force was used against another person and I have successfully  defended that action in both criminal and civil court, and WON.

I am one of the few instructors that is accredited by the University of Kansas Law Enforcement Division as a Police Firearms Instructor. (One of the most rigorous firearms training programs with a high failure rate.) I am certified to teach all aspects of the defensive use of firearms.

If I have the right to carry that means anywhere right?

No there are several areas within the State that it is prohibited to concealed carry a weapon. We will go over those places in this training course. Also Kansas is one of only a few States that recognize constitutional carry. In other jurisdictions a license is required and without one you could face fines and jail time.

Will this course teach me how to shoot?

While the class offers basic marksmanship training it is just that, basic. However we do offer other courses to improve skills.

How many States would recognize my license?

Currently there are 39 of the 50 States that recognize Kansas Concealed Carry License. Also there are 16 States that have constitutional carry but Idaho, North Dakota and Wyoming only allow for constitutional carry by their residents.  So if you are visiting them you will need a Concealed Carry License.

What kind of gun do I need to bring?

I would suggest a gun you are comfortable with. It can be as small as a .22 or as large as you can safely handle and pass the concealed carry course with. A gun and ammunition is available for rent.

What other equipment will I need to bring?

For this class you will need any handgun of any caliber, 50 rounds of training or defense ammunition, hearing and eye protection and for classes that are all day please bring a lunch. There is a refrigerator on site to store your food in and keep drinks cold.
